MEET OUR IN-HOUSE PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Hi! I’m Sophie,

I’m excited to be a part of the multi-disciplinary team here at Strength For Endurance, and look forward to having the opportunity to work with you.

Throughout my career to date, I have met many athletes stuck in difficult cycles of recurrent or chronic injuries that kept them out of their sport. As humans we want a quick fix and instant reward for our efforts and there is a lot of that offered in healthcare. Although this can temporarily ease symptoms, it can mask the fact that the muscles, joints and tendons lack the capacity to cope with the demands of sport. I have seen athletes commit to the same rehab for months on end but not see results.

The rehab process must be sufficiently progressive and move away from just treating the injured area to see change. If not, I often see these individuals get poor results or the problem shifts to another area in due course.

After starting my physio journey in the NHS, it was when I worked in a small private gym where I first discovered the power of strength and conditioning. I saw the power of getting patients out of the clinic room and straight into the gym.

“I saw that those who followed progressive strength programmes, addressing all weaknesses rather than isolated strengthening had the best outcomes.”

Training practices are often lacking in periodisation and consistency with little to no recovery in place. This frustrating pattern can affect athletes for years and that is why it is great working with Kriss and the team at SFE to help change the narrative. The answer doesn’t have to be complicated but it does require consistency. S&C does not have to be a necessary evil for endurance athletes and can be enjoyable too!

Speaking from experience….

As an athlete myself I have competed in a real range of sports including: Modern Pentathlon, Triathlon, Hockey, Trail/Mountain Running and Ultra Running. I have experienced the heartbreak and disappointment of injuries, some of which I was convinced would end my endurance aspirations.

In my early 20’s, I was advised by a health professional that maybe my body wasn’t designed for this. Sadly, I have spoken to many individuals who have been told the same.

As my knowledge and experience developed as a physio, I realised it was not my genetics that was the issue but lack of structured strength work and poor training habits (ie too hard too much of the time). Discovering that ‘glory sessions’ achieve very little except increasing risk of injury and Strava average speed is best to be ignored is something that many.

Consistency in strength work, plyometrics, recovery and training has transformed my performance and the number of injuries sustained along the way.  This has also enabled me to find the love of training and racing again. My own journey has helped me empathise with the athletes I work with and offer proof that the cycle can change.

“As a physio, I strongly believe we must move away from treating the painful area in isolation, but instead look the bigger picture.”

Treatment techniques that make things feel better for a while may have a place at times, but they will not improve the body’s capacity for the hard work.  For example, a calf strain is rarely just an issue with the calf not being strong enough. We must address strength, endurance (globally and locally), joint range of motion, training history, injury/medical history, recovery strategies, fuelling and hormonal status. Then we can put together a comprehensive programme to ultimately aim at return to sport.

virtual physiotherapy appointments

How do virtual physiotherapy appointments work?

For the most part, what we need to make an injury diagnosis comes from the verbal history that we’ll take during your assessment. A comprehensive history will give us the nature, location, pattern, injury/training history and severity of pain, aggravating and easing activities etc. We also need to see you move and assess your strengths and weaknesses; this also helps us to screen for more serious injuries.

We then have the benefits of our SFE Movement Screen & Baseline Testing data and videos. On a video call, we can assess further movements if required. Occasionally, you may need an assessment in-person, in which case we’d help arrange that for you.

The huge benefit of employing a multi-disciplinary approach is that we can assess, plan, treat and monitor you consistently to ensure you progress. Our team will work together to adjust your program, plan and set goals, enabling us to tackle any issues as they arise.

When working with Strength for Endurance, you’ll get access to a support system of experts, who are working together to remove that confusion and optimise the effectiveness of your rehab.

Along with a structured and progressive approach to your rehab, our training lab and masterclasses offer you a huge library of resources to help you get the most out of this process and arm you with the tools to transform your training practices.
